Real Player, Pros & Cons

  1. How come I chose Real Video Player format over the other formats, for better or for worse (The techies)
  2. Why read this - (It's only my opinion)
  3. My Review of it
  4. My Review of the video format from User-point of view
  5. Clickable links to install
Real Player: how to install, and why for any recommendation of anything, (my personal opinion review) why it is recommended, and why the video formats came to this format (part of it is cost: only one format, and this is not a paid or sponsored review.)

I understand there have been user-software issues against this and previous versions of software of RealPlayer
If you want to just jump to the recommended installs, click here

  • Versions earlier than Version 10 did not include uninstall software code built-in to the software, so that caused concern with some customers.
  • People don't like options shoved down their throat, such as hijacking. I don't know if #10 does that, but earlier versions did
  • People don't like self-installing options placed on the "system tray" to hog system bandwidth (= limit the speed of the CPU - microprocessor) Version 10 still does this.
  • People don't like uneeded shortcuts put on the desktop, including "AOL invade (install)" Options. None of this happened to me with Version 10.
  • While Version 10 does not address every issue of the previous complaints from the rank and file - but it seems better. Remember Version 10 has a free version and doesn't require a credit card for download.
Pros of RealVideo / Real Player software
  • First and foremost: There has never been a PRIVACY issue with them as to trying to glean any information off of your computer. Even though I do not like self-installing messengers, due to possible third party hacking.
  • As a last resort you can get a trimmed down all the fat trimmed off "enterprise version"
  • Any unwanted shortcuts on the desktop can be "clicked but not opened". Then (I'm a PC user) hit the shift key and then depress Delete, check yes, and then OK, and (any) unwanted shortcuts = gone.
  • The above and this one is if you let it install itself - Where it sticks "messenger" on the right, I don't like backdoors open to hackers, so I opened its "options" and unchecked everything, and it is gone (Hooray! I hate backdoors to hackers.)
  • If you have a previous version - since this version is less intrusive, I suggest thumbs up to upgrade. Better, just get rid of messenger is my suggestion: it was fast and easy (install and getting rid of messenger) and the Software DID NOT reinstall it on the next Boot up. (A PLEASANT surprise.)
  • Real Player files have visually stunning detail in video and audio that you won't expect. It really has ALWAYS been good.
  • It is (as is) cross platform compatable with old and new versions of Windows and Macs, which makes it (vastly) superior in one file fits all VS Windows Media. (In other words, it is doing a better job of compatablity ot Windows products then Windows does.) So here could be a justification to being "malicious" in hijacking, but I say thanks: LET THE QUALITY SPEAK FOR ITSELF AND DON"T FORCE YOURSELF: into the system tray.Beat the competition with quality, not with software tactics.. Hijacking = checking for you to automatically play all other formats that you are USED to playing in your other favorite video viewer, and making you reselect that player for the stuff you were using it for (If you dissaprove of the switch.) If there is only the one item I don't like, then GREAT - Unbelievable - you guys rock - listening to the customer!

(On the Hijack complaint, I implore to hard workers who agree and the management at who agree when Real.com corporate reads our suggestions, once this page makes its way to the top of the Search Engines - right along with the top download sites :) I'm not bragging, but what I write does get read eventually:)

So, keeping all that in mind (forgetting my review of Real(®)) I obviously feel that putting my first streaming video into Real Player using "Real Video" style because in a close race between it and Quicktime, Macintosh technology, I felt Real Player is here to stay and moving towards the consumer-side of things, small but real steps.

I give Real.com a thumbs up, in attaboy for that - and a plea to continue listening to your customer and do (all important) everything your customer insists you do. In any case I say to all customers of their to keep the pressure up, and we will hope they will continue more and more to "do the right thing" with Real Player software - make it consumer friendly and let the consumer make all the decisions, and MARKET (advertise in an unobtrusive way) why it is so good and let the customer decide what options are best for him/her, not management deciding: remember the buyers of the paid version pay your salary - don't get "big head" on providing for the customer. And the harder you make it for customers the more quickly they will turn to inferior products.

To the consumer, while there are negatives, and I wish there weren't: it just isn't perfectly 100% consumer intelligent in my view (and countless others) in automatic install nore nearly WHAT IT SHOULD be in custom install (with all options automatically checked making customer uncheck them appears "arrogant" to the consumer) just as water isn't: sinking to the bottom of a lake could be hazardous to your health!

    • realPlayer® version 10 If you don't have pay or free version, you will need to download free or pay real player here or version 10 while it is available here to view the streaming videos (no download of the files necessary) corporate download: here, http://Real.com

    • Real Player is highly recommended because it is a great player, and at least now you can uninstall it and easily fix everything you don't want if you do "auto-install". Its only problems were management problems - and if they continue listening to everyone who has a minor complaint you will see better versions in the future.
    • For the trimmed-down "corporate version" (means it will work better on old and tired systems) is here You can just fill in anything in the form and it will work. The corporate version does not have any of the problems in the review that were in the earlier versions, and is trimmer code. It says an e-mail address is required - which I guess that would be the only thing that has to be correct. (In other words if you want to abreviate your information I don't see why not, but I know of no problems.)
    • .

My review on Real Video, RealPlayer.com is, Guys over there both thumbs up since you have such great code: just continue to be nice: maybe give THREE versions with one option "the minimilist version = all the player and ONLY the player!!" Ads for your company=OK at least in the "custom install" making the customer check ENERYTHING he wants BEYOND the MINIMUM necessary to use the Minimum features. = Look, great Product = Don't tick off your customers. TRY what you sell, and allow department interface in teams, and comunicate within, and have team leaders. Develop a front and interface and nonintrusivity consistant with your tight code. Don't quarrel and take the modern management system: Management works for the team and the team INCLUDES the customer, whose money and good will is ALL IMPORTANT.
Pay attention to any review that is negative like you are doing, and continue your quality path forward! Good job folks. As to the negatives that still exist I hope they will either disappear, or with proper education, consumers will make them disappear on their own. Keep in mind I have stated the positives outweigh the current negatives with proper education, and water has negatives too: sinking to the bottom of a lake is hazardous to your health! I know it is strange to mention negatives on a private review, but the truth is the truth.

And that is the way it is on a free review. Real gets what they pay for: in this case a "Real" review. (And no sponsors = no reason to really sugar coat it, but remember everyone, this is also a strong Testimonial as best of the best - just where some feel is a good idea to improve: look, function and feel. Even my own product, < a href="molyfusion1.html">MolyFUSION™ I SPELL out the good, the bad, and the ugly. (And it is a TERRIFIC product - just look at the record shots it helps make in the video and targets and testimonial shooting TRAINING can happen rather then CLEANING. It is just with all BEST OF THE BEST products: they ALL may have drawbacks! In spite of a "MUST USE."

Update1, 8-26-04: Info: In order to use a product I endorse, Pest Patrol, in order to use it I have to get to Task Manager (Type Ctrl, Alt, and Delete all together then select Task Manager) Then click arrow onto Mediadetect and then click onto Endtask then wait, and confirm. Then I have to do the same for Wmexe. Once I do that, then Pest Patrol = update and search and seek latest spyware, adware, and trojans. This has to be done verytime Windows is started. I think I like the idea of those programs not running in the background.

Update2, 8-26-04: For RealPlayer's privacy policy for US, english speaking (How I got there, burrying deep into their site to find in the most obscure place: bottom left of screen (my computer) privacy policy, click here It explains about there use of all their other programs installed with RealPlayer, and what their privacy policy is.
