Mods
There are some mods necessary, but my conversion shoots just fine with a 22lr bolt with 22MAG ammo. I use heavy springs exactly the same as my HM2, factory weight handle, etc. In fact, the action is identically tuned for HM2 and 22MAG, and they BOTH work just fine. I did the "Setback" conversion into a "Packer" BC stock with Leupold QRW mount/rings, and can change calibers/barrels/ammo in less than 1 minute. Now that I just received my 1:9 SSS Aguila 22lr barrel, I plan to add that to the repertoire of the same action, and have all three tuned to work without a hitch from one action (I needed a really hot 22lr to cycle the action). The HMR however, is a different animal, and I haven't gotten it to work perfectly YET, but I will, one step at a time (the HMR is maximized at about a 19" barrel length, which makes it difficult to relieve pressure soon enough to get away with it from lr factory weighted action).
To take it one step further, I am also working on a 96 HMR that will share the same "Pool" of barrels, and also rapidly interchange, but utilizes a diriment method of rapid barrel change that does not involve the stock needing to break open at the front of the receiver.
For me, the biggest secret has been a modified magnum magazine that accepts lr based ammo, and Moly Fusion treatment in unison with mathematically correct barrel porting.
Be as skeptical as you want, but don't be negative towards other people if you can help it, I have never posted a single picture ever on any forum, but for darn sure, my rifle works fantastically. I recently got offered a 1988 Mitsubishi Starion Turbo in trade for my rifle from a buddy that went shooting prairie dogs with me in July. I turned down that offer, but countered him with an offer to build him one just like it. Guess what? I now own a Mitsubishi Starion Turbo. Guess how much the rifle is costing me to build? Do ya think he'd be doing this if he wasn't amazed at the rifles capabilities?
Settle in, and get busy, and ask others as many questions as you need to, to figure it out, that's what I did.
It's a really challenging project, but the rewards are well worth it. :t
