How to Treat Bike Chains

Mountain Bikes, and all gear Peddle Bikes

  1. Kick stand up.
  2. Lean the left side of the bike against an immovable object wall tree.
  3. Wrap a bungee cord arount the front brake levers into the closed position. "kentucky parking break" :)
  4. Put bike into the highest gear combination available (Makes the chain go into the fastest horizontal movement.)
  5. Then put a rag over the back wheel to protect from oil/solvent spray spray (Not on the rim or rubber).
  6. Put a small amount of Naptha or charcoal lighter fluid - dribble on while manualy turning the peddle backwards.
  7. You can sit on a milk crate while doing - make yourself comfortable.
  8. Now the grease is out.
  9. Kerosene and Carcoal lighter fluid works better then brake cleaner. Brake Cleaner doesn't remove it well.
  10. Wipe the chain the down with a Terry Cloth to get all the solvent and oil and grease off of the chain manually.
  11. Go ahead and have the Sun to your back and warm up the chain to ideal treatment temperature for a 10X performance improvement. (Jonathan add)
  12. Then with it turning slowly backwards, then lay down a continuous bead of treatment oil along the sideplates and one bead along the rollers of the chain itself. to get it all. (It takes patience and time.)
  13. Once it sets up for a day or two ot three, then take aother terry cloth (big old bath towel cut down) and make slightly damp with solvent (same stuff, as in K1 Kerosene - the evaporating kind to nothing - no residue) Make sure it is not #1 fuel oil, but K1. Or use The charcoal lighter fluid - it is pretty immflamable.
  14. See the Motor Chains below for more areas of the bike to treat.
